Twists on Tea Portability:
Easy ways for customers to take tea anywhere
The health benefits of tea, especially green tea,
have been known for millennia. Yet the method of brewing
loose-leaf tea- somewhat time-consuming and even messy-
hasn’t changed all that much over the centuries.
For yet another twist on tea portability, check out the
new biodegradable teabags introduced by Mighty Leaf Tea.
The San Rafael, Calif., company is known for the silken
nylon Tea Pouch™ concept it originated some 10 years
ago, which influenced the industry’s move away from
glued paper teabags. Now it’s made its entire line of
more than 15 whole-leaf artisan-crafted tea blends
available in pre-filled biodegradable bags, sheer
hand-stitched mesh fabric made from cornstarch-derived
polylactic acid filaments.
“This really does take portability to a new level,” says
Annelies Zijderveld, marketing coordinator. “The other
day when I was on an airplane, I pulled out my
biodegradable mesh bag of herbal tea and made a
wonderful herbal infusion in a cup of hot water the
attendant brought me. Now there’s no reason to give up
the quality of loose-leaf tea.”
Mighty Leaf’s biodegradable teabags are very strong and
translucent, making the tea leaves visible as they brew
and allowing subtle flavors to emerge unimpeded.
Eventually the bags biodegrade, making them an
environmentally friendly choice for consumers.
Place one of the pre-filled bags in a cup of hot water
and cover with Mighty Leaf’s distinctive lids decorated
with yin-yang symbols, and then pull the string when
brewing is complete- and you have just used your very
own “traveling teapot,” according to Zijderveld.
To make things even easier, labels are color-coded:
purple for black tea, green for green tea, and orange
for herbals. Consumer favorites include Organic Earl
Grey, Orange Dulce, Green Tea Tropical, African Nectar
and Chamomile Citrus.
“Specialty tea is really exploding because of the health
findings,” says Zijderveld. “People want to make healthy
choices, and tea is certainly one of those. So now we’re
tapping into that market of people who want to keep the
flavorful, whole-leaf experience, but do away with the
inconvenience and mess that’s associated with loose-leaf
tea.”
Minimum order is $200, with a shelf life of about a
year.
