SCAA pours Best New
Product Awards, Barista champ honored
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Five companies took home Best New
Product Awards in five categories at the Specialty
Coffee Association's Expo held here April 8-10.
Bellisimo Coffee Information Group, Portland, Ore., was
honored in the Education category for its Advanced
Barista Techniques DVD; Mighty Leaf Tea Co., San Rafael,
Calif., was awarded best Packaging for its Biodegradable
Natural Tea Pouches; The Coffee Equipment Co., Seattle,
won in the Coffee Preparation Equipment category for its
Clover 1; Monin Gourmet Flavorings, Clearwater, Fla.,
was honored in the Specialty Beverage category for its
Sticky Toffee Steamer; and Torani / R. Torre & Co., San
Francisco, Basil Pure Flavor and Cilantro Pure Flavor
won in the Food category.
In related news, the winner of the 2006 U.S. Barista
Championships held at the SCAA Expo was Matt Riddle of
Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea, Chicago. Riddle competed
against 50 other baristas from across the country. Seven
USBC-certified judges, including one head judge, two
technical judges and four sensory judges, evaluated each
of the competitors on station cleanliness, taste,
beverage presentation, technical skills and total
impression.
Riddle received a trophy, $1,000 and an all-expenses
paid trip to the 7th Annual World Barista Championship
in Berne, Switzerland May 19-21. All competitors
received the latest home espresso machine from Krups,
the XP 4050.
